"How many days until…?" sounds simple until months with 28, 30 and 31 days get involved. Here's how the counting actually works β€” and the common traps.

The basic rule

The difference between two dates is end date minus start date, counted in full 24-hour days. From Monday to Wednesday is 2 days, not 3 β€” you're counting the steps between dates, not the dates touched. If you need an inclusive count (both the first and last day), add 1.

Where people go wrong

  1. Assuming every month has 30 days. It drifts your count by days over longer ranges.
  2. Forgetting leap years. February has 29 days in leap years (2024, 2028…), which shifts any range crossing them.
  3. Weekends. For deadlines, what usually matters is business days β€” the calculator above counts Mon–Fri days separately.

When precision matters

Visa validity, notice periods, contract deadlines and project plans are all counted in calendar days from a specific start date. Count twice, and use exact date arithmetic (like the tool above) instead of estimating "about 3 months."
